The Pilates reformer is an advanced piece of fitness equipment that makes for an excellent workout. Many people first come across the reformers in a local fitness center or gym and eventually end up purchasing one for their home. The pieces of equipment are not cheap, but there are several to choose from and even used pieces make them affordable for private use. The reformers are made up of many pieces and parts that enhance a workout enabling an entire body workout in one setting.

The basic functions of the Pilates reformer will be the same regardless of minor changes. Some are wood framed and others are metal framed. Of course just like anything else the metal frames are sturdier and last longer. Depending on the persons using the reformer and their size would make a difference as to whether you would want a wood or metal frame, besides appearance preferences. Other minor differences may include a reformer on legs or one that sits directly on the floor. There is not much difference between the two, just in looks and depending on the amount of room that you have in your home.

Many of the Pilates reformer’s come with a set of ropes and/or straps that help workout with resistance. Remembering that the goal of ~Pilates is to strengthen the core muscle groups and the best way to achieve the goal is with resistance. The leather straps/ropes are attached to a pulley on the reformer allowing them to move with individual controlled resistance. The individual’s body weight determines the amount of resistance and the straps are used to pull the body along the reformer.

The foot bar system of the reformer can be adjusted depending on the amount of resistance that the individual is comfortable with. In the beginning for someone that is just starting out the lower resistance is generally a better choice. Remember you will have to get up out of bed and walk tomorrow – so take it slow, building up to a higher resistance level. The springs are located within the reformer and can be adjusted the rest of the resistance comes from the individual bodies resistance. The resistance “notches” or levels are color coded so that the individual can determine the best level for them. Green is the lightest resistance level and red would be the heaviest resistance level.

There are a range of Pilate’s reformers that can be purchased. It is advisable to visit a fitness center or some other place where you could determine the right reformer for your needs. The reformers are easy to use, but are a costly adventure that individuals need to be sure about before making the purchase.
