Finding a Pilates class is not difficult with the amount of facilities offering the exercise system. Comparable to Yoga, Pilates has taken the world by storm. Most of the classes are very similar with the same type of core strengthening exercises, but there are differences in the Pilates instructors. Some times people do not realize the amount of difference that a trained instructor can make, but it can be enormous. Many fitness centers that offer Pilates classes screen their Pilates instructors with due diligence. There are Pilates certifications and schools that can be attended to learn the basics of the exercise system. There are basic principles of the Pilates system that need to be incorporated into the class for an optimum workout. Searching on the internet or purchasing a Pilates DVD can help you understand these basic principles so that you can determine the skill level of the instructor. Keep in mind that there are well over one hundred exercises that can be completed on the Pilates floor mat. If you are always repeating the same exercises you may want to consider attending a different class. It is important to practice variety and other types of exercises to work the entire body. Unless the class is only targeting one area of the body, only the exercises should change. For example if you are strengthening after an injury or working on strengthening the back the exercises might be similar. In some Pilate’s fitness centers there will be additional exercise equipment that can be used to enhance the workout. The reformers and reformer chairs can be used for an all over body workout, with or without the floor workout. Some of the Pilates instructors will incorporate the use of Yoga, resistance bands and even a Pilate’s ball also known as a stability ball. The use of the other types of equipment will help with balance, stability and flexibility, but not required for an excellent workout. Pilate’s instructors should be well versed in the Pilates exercises to provide their participants with the best workout possible. Understanding the manner by which the mind controls the muscles will help enormously. Pilates is not only an exercise system for the physical body, but also allows the mind to exercise with concentration and focus of their attention. Many people report that they are well relaxed and have a feeling of well being after attending a Pilate’s class. Most fitness centers have a record of the Pilates instructors’ certification, classes or basics. Just because someone has a certification does not necessarily mean that the person is a good Pilates instructor, this will need to be determined by participating in the class. What one feels is a good instructor may not be good for someone else. |
